Goals, Skills, and Objectives

Cardinals

4 to 5 year olds

 

SOCIAL SKILLS
 
  • Experience the pleasure of playing with a group of children all the same age and helps put toys away at clean up time.

  • Respects the rights and property of others and uses manner words.

  • Learn to share, take turns, and cooperate with others.

  • Sit and attend to work in a small for 20 to 25 minutes and large group for 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Makes an effort to solve problems before seeking help.

  • Ask for help when needed.

  • Transitions from one activity to another easily

  • Begins to shows self-control.

  • Speaks kindly to classmates

  • Politely waits to talk when an adult is speaking.

 
READING READINESS SKILLS
 
  • Recognize and identify all the letters of the alphabet (upper & lowercase)

  • Identify initial consonant sounds

  • Introduced to blend sounds  

  • Listen to determine which words rhyme and naming the words that rhyme. 

  • Can recite Nursery Rhymes.

  • Names opposites.

  • Orders pictures by time sequence in a story or situation.

  • Practice retelling a story by memory and with the aid of picture clues.

  • Recognize several words that rhyme and put them in a word family group and begin to read.  For example the word “at” produces a rhyming family: bat, cat, sat, mat, etc

  • Predicts realistic outcomes of events.

  • Shows interest in the printed words.

  • Begin reading books using pictures for clues to the printed word.

  • Sequences 2-3-4 part stories.

  • Retells simple to more difficult stories.

 

MATH/SCIENCE READINESS SKILLS
 
  • Recognize and identify the basic shapes.

  • Recognize, identify and count numerals up to 20.

  • Read a simple graph.

  • Sort and classify by color and shape.

  • Recognize and understand ordinal and cardinal numbers.

  • Solve simple verbal problems using numbers.

  • Can print numbers to 20.  Can name the penny, nickel, dime and quarter.

  • Understand “More than/less than/same” with numbers to ten.

  • Count and understand one to one relationships up to twenty.

  •  Science Experiments that follow these steps: 

            1.  The teacher states  question.     

            2. The children make a hypothesis.

            3. The class does the  experiment.

            4. The class states and records the conclusion.

 

 

FINE MOTOR SKILLS

 

  • Hold small crayons, markers and pencil with grips correctly.

  • Cut holding the scissor correctly and using the helping hand

  • Cuts objects following straight and curvy lines.

  • Write first and last name in upper and lowercase letters.

  • Color objects within the lines using a back and forth motion.

  • Develop artistic skills using a variety of media:  water colors, tempera,

  • finger paints, markers, crayons and clay.

  • Zip zippers and lace laces and tie shoes

  • Put together a 20 to 25-piece puzzle.

  • Print the letters of the alphabet in upper and lowercase.

  • Print numbers 1 to 20.

  • Incorporate correctly drawn circles, squares and triangles to draw a recognizable figure.

  • Can thread a child size needle and weave a simple project.

 

GROSS MOTOR SKILLS
 
  • Enjoys the freedom to run and jump during gym and playground time.

  • Gallop, skip, hop on one foot ten times.

  • Pedal on a bicycle

  • Catch a ball away from the body with hands only.

  • Throw a ball and beanbag through a hoop.

  • Throw a ball and a beanbag slightly higher in the air and catch it on the way down.

  • Throw a ball overhand and underhand.

  • Catch a ball when thrown.

  • Walk forward and backwards on a 10 foot line without falling off. Crab & elephant walk

  • Wheel barrel with adult holding leg

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS
 
  • Retell an incident that occurred in correct sequence.

  • Recite many common nursery rhymes and songs.

  • Make relevant contributions in small group discussions.

  • Describe an object using color, size, shape, composition and use.

  • Speaks clearly.

  • Can sit and listen to a story, to the teacher and/or a classmate in a large

  • group for 15 to 20 minutes.

  • State full name, address, phone number, and birthday.

  • Speaks in complete sentences, using correct tense and speech patterns.

  • Follow 3 to 4 part directions.

  • Describe a picture using three statements.

  • Show an understanding of past, present, and future tense by using proper

  • verb forms.
